S1-E67: St. Helena: Island Between Worlds

In May 1775, Captain Cook’s Resolution anchors at St. Helena, a vital waypoint on the long route between continents. From the sea, the island appears desolate: steep volcanic rock, scorched valleys, and a settlement pressed tightly between unforgiving slopes. Yet those who climb beyond the first ridges discover a striking contrast.

The island’s interior reveals a landscape of green hills, fertile valleys, and flowing streams—an environment carefully sustained against the pressures of isolation. Here, European settlers, soldiers, and enslaved people live side by side, forming a fragile society shaped by global trade and strict hierarchy.

The crew encounters not only the island’s natural richness but also its social life: formal dinners, lively debates, and elegant gatherings that feel worlds away from the hardships of the open ocean. At the same time, deeper tensions remain visible—in labor, in inequality, and in the constant struggle to make this remote outpost viable.

St. Helena becomes a place of recovery and reflection. After years at sea, the men regain strength, exchange knowledge, and briefly reconnect with a more familiar world. But the journey is not over. Soon, the Resolution will raise anchor once more—leaving behind this island between worlds and turning north toward home.
