S1-E66: Cape of Good Hope: From Ice to Africa

In Episode 66, they sail from the frozen edge of the Southern Ocean toward the distant coast of Africa—until ice, fog, and the sea itself begin to deceive them.

In this episode of Voyage2Go History, Georg Forster and the crew of the HMS Resolution are driven deep into the icy waters of the Southern Atlantic. Surrounded by towering icebergs, dense fog, and relentless cold, they are forced to abandon their southern course just miles beyond the 60th parallel. Exhaustion, hunger, and the strain of constant danger weigh heavily on the crew as their hopes of discovering a great southern continent begin to fade.

Instead, they encounter a rugged and desolate land—later named Southern Thule—its black cliffs rising steeply from a storm-lashed sea. This discovery revives ancient ideas of the world’s edge, yet at the same time challenges the geographical assumptions of their age. As observations accumulate, long-held scientific beliefs begin to crumble, and the expedition comes closer to understanding the true nature of the southern regions.

The HMS Resolution enters Table Bay at last—after months in ice and isolation, the sight of land and anchored ships marks their long-awaited return to the world.

But the hardships are far from over. With provisions running dangerously low and the crew weakened by months of salted rations, the decision is made to turn north. What follows is a slow and uncertain return toward Africa, marked by deceptive sightings, shifting winds, and the constant struggle to endure.

At last, familiar waters bring the first signs of Europe: distant ships, shared signals, and the overwhelming relief of human contact. News from the outside world, a meal of fresh meat, and the sight of the African coast signal the beginning of the end of one of the most demanding legs of the voyage.

This episode captures a turning point in the journey—where ambition meets its limits, and knowledge begins to replace speculation.
