What to do in Taman Negara National Park

Since COVID-19, the travel world has gotten really mixed up and a lot of what you find in the travel guides is no longer true. I had this experience in the last two days when I set out for the oldest tropical rainforest in the world, the Taman Negara National Park.

No more buses from Jerantut to Taman Negara National Park

The first important information where reality of January 2023 no longer matches the information in all the guidebooks is that those buses that would run three times a day from the city of Jerantut to Kuala Tahan, the main town of the national park are not going any more.

The current information is that if you do not have your own car, you must take a taxi to Kuala Tahan. Taxis can be found at Terminal Sentral Jerantut, Jerantut's bus terminal. The fare to Kuala Tahan is 80 Ringgit. Alternatively, I can recommend the Grab app. Download beforehand and register your own credit card. Provided you have bought a SIM card for Malaysia with a data package, your mobility is secured and you can call a Grab driver from anywhere. This often costs even less than the regular taxis.

There are no ATMs in Taman Negara and credit card payments are not accepted

This is another important piece of information that was not in my guidebook. But without enough cash you are lost in the national park. You have to pay for all activities and probably also your accommodation on site in cash in the local currency ringgit. So make sure you have enough cash beforehand.
