The Resolution leaves New Caledonia in a state of quiet desperation. Illness lingers, strength is fading, and the promise of discovery is overshadowed by a far more urgent concern: survival.
The departure marks the beginning of a tense and exhausting passage along one of the most treacherous coastlines of the voyage. Weak and unreliable winds repeatedly leave the ship at the mercy of currents and heavy swells, pushing it dangerously close to unseen reefs. Progress is slow, uncertain, and at times nearly fatal.
Along the shore, strange column-like formations rise into the sky—first believed to be remnants of volcanic activity, but later revealed as forests of impossibly straight trees. Among them, the Isle of Pines stands out as one of the most striking landscapes yet encountered.
But beauty offers little comfort. Food is scarce, and the crew’s desperation becomes evident when even known poisonous fish are nearly consumed. Sharks and seabirds become essential sources of nourishment as provisions dwindle further.
Then, in the midst of a deadly calm, a blazing meteor crosses the night sky—an event both awe-inspiring and unsettling. Soon after, the wind finally returns.
With it, the expedition breaks free from the reefs and turns southward, setting course for New Zealand—still weakened, still hungry, but moving forward once more.
